notes

Six Strings and Vinyl is the long-awaited fourth album from Fran Snyder. Snyder makes yet another, major sonic departure from his previous pop/rock work. He says the change was inspired by his move to Atlanta, Georgia a few years ago.

"I had regarded Atlanta as an "Acoustic Mecca" for many years, as I witnessed the talent of acts like the Indigo Girls, Beth Wood, Shawn Mullins, and later John Mayer. It wasn't until I moved there that I discovered the magnitude of the hip-hop scene and how the art of "turntablism" was developing into a serious, new sonic palate."

"I had been looking for a new idea for some time, and with the advent of "digital turntables," the technology was now in place for me to create something totally new. I found talented DJs to experiment with (DJ Lord of Public Enemy, DJ Energy, and MVP) and developed an approach which combined the best elements of urban and acoustic styles.

"Using battle records and old vinyl, we'd find loops and textures and sound effects to lay a foundation for each song. We'd then manipulate the beats with the DJ mixer (live) to keep the loops from getting stale, and throw in digital samples we'd create in the studio to keep things totally fresh."

The act has really caught on at colleges and clubs throughout the country and this initial demo really demonstrates the best of two converging worlds; the soulful acoustic songcraft with the pumping grooves and attitude of urban music. It just had to happen in Atlanta...

"Two voices, two turntables, and one guitar"

Six Strings and Vinyl is a new act founded by singer/songwriter Fran Snyder. Fran is one of the southeast's most sought-after acoustic singer songwriters, and for this project he combined his groovy acoustic songs with urban beats and textures. This new sound is accomplished with the help of a DJ/turntablist/rapper. Together, they create "words for your mind, music for your soul, and beats for your booty."

While Fran strums, slaps and pics his acoustic guitar, the DJ will lay down a foundation of beats, scratches, and orchestral sounds using turntables and a mixer. They both contribute vocals, an 80/20 mix of singing and spoken word. Snyder's voice is one-of-a-kind, soaring, and passionate - and the rhymes (delivered by young Atlanta DJ MVP) exude a rich, easy going flow.

This initial collectors demo also features DJLord of Public Enemy laying down some serious scratching solos on "Other Side" and "Your Boy." DJ Energy cuts vicious on "Night Like This" - a newly added song. Check out the songs for free, then buy your copy today!

  • Amazing!!!!

When I first heard the CD, I was blown away by the new sound! The only complaint I have is that there aren't more tracks.

  • very, very, very, cool

OK, I've heard a LOT of music, but this is the coolest thing I have heard in I don't know how long. I never thought much of "DJ's" or "turntablists" but this disc is making me change my mind. The vinyl scratching on the first track (newly added? I don't see a sample on this page) "Night Like This" is soooooo cool. "Huh-huh-huh-Heeyah!" This kills anything I've heard from Incubus or any other rock-band-with-a-DJ. Saw them at Teikyo Post College (TPC Rocks!) and they put on a great show. They even played Eminem's "Lose yourself" and tore it up. Rock on!

  • Where is the girl?
    author: Marcus Worzniak

Hey, I just saw them live in Hanover, NH and picked up the CD. But where is the girl? There was a Af-American girl working the turntables. Pretty wild. The disc is cool. I just thought the girl would be on it. The guy rapping has a cool voice, though.

  • Interesting stuff

I'm a skeptic. But I saw them live at Dartmouth College and really dug the vibe. I really didn't think it would work on disc, but it's almost as good as the live show. It still feels like an acoustic album, just groovier I guess.

  • Way cool music. Love it!!

This CD is unlike anything I've ever heard. I saw the act live and they sound exactly like the CD. "Other Side of the World" is amazing. The only thing that would make this better is more songs.

  • very unique, fun, and meaningful
    author: Nancy Oeswein

Very cool demo size disc. Fran Snyder's new sound is very unique and enjoyable. The songs are as good as ever, but the unusual use of a DJ with acoustic driven music really adds a lot of punch. Get this CD if you can't wait for the full one due out this summer.
