21BLACK is a three-piece Rock band based in San Antonio, TX. They formed in May
2004. The band is currently promoting the release of their new album "Now is the Time".
The members of 21BLACK have a variety of influences ranging from classic rock, jazz,
blues, and classical music. The band's primary focus is writing, recording, and
performing their original music.
Tim Specht joined his first real band playing all the solos on flute, since the band didn't have
a lead guitar player. He later taught himself to play guitar, on his dad's old Gibson guitar.
Tim now plays bass, key bass, keys, and flute, and he sings lead and backup. His equipment
includes a Peavey TL-5 five-string bass, an Ensoniq SQ-2 synthesizer, a custom-modified
Peavey TKO-75BW amplifier, and a Gemeinhardt M-2 flute.
Drummer Leo Zepeda, Jr. holds a Masters degree in Music from UT Austin. His music
experience began in the Tejano music scene, playing trumpet and saxophone for Latin
Lites II, Jesse Serata and the Sunshine Band, and La Sombra. He credits his father Leo
Sr. (former drummer for Freddie Fender) as being his earliest musical influence. Leo
plays an important role in harmonizing backup vocals for the band.
Guitar player Robert Gloria decided to take up the instrument after witnessing the
bombastic antics of Ritchie Blackmore at concerts in Southern California. Robert hails
from the suburbs north of Los Angeles and was exposed to heavy doses of Deep Purple,
Van Halen, and Robin Trower. He has played in both hard rock and rock/blues bands.
Robert has always been inspired by the works of Bach, Beethoven, and Tchaikosvky.
21BLACK has appeared in the Ponderous Productions 2008 movie series "The Innocent
Killers". Their music is featured as a recurring theme in each of the ten series of movies,
and the band appears in 3 of the movies.
21BLACK's debut album "Now is the Time" shows the wide range of the band's musical
influences and moods. The song "It's Only Money" makes an upbeat statement about the
world's current economic woes. "It Is What It Is" is a straight ahead funk rock groover.
The title track of the album "Now is the Time" is heavy and swirling, with a memorable
hook line. "Open the Door" marks the band's epoch involvement and appearance in
Ponderous Production's 2008 "The Innocent Killers" movie series. The song is a
recurring theme in the ten film epic saga, and 21BLACK is proud to have appeared in
three of the movies. "Open the Door" is guaranteed to satisfy the appetite of any
progressive-rocker, but included on the album are acoustic and jazz versions for those
that fancy other tastes. On the lighter side, the song "Desert Soul" is a smooth and sexy
instrumental, demonstrating that 21BLACK can indeed change its musical colors.
