Akino el Chovi, born Melvin Aquino Garcia, was raised in Samana, the Dominican Republic, and spent his youth in Santiago. He shared a home with a brother, five sisters, and his mother and father. Akino el Chovi pursued music from a very young age, singing in church and making instruments out of whatever he could find in the street. Music was always the objective and Akino el Chovi has called himself “un cantante” for as long as he remembers. Born with an ear for music, singing has always been Chovi’s calling in life. There is no other way to spend his life but through singing and performing.
While living in the streets of Santiago in his teens, Akino el Chovi found a broken guitar in a dumpster. He took the guitar, fixed it himself, and taught himself to play. He would spend his time in the streets playing the guitar, writing songs, and playing his favorite bachatas by ear. By his late teens, Akino el Chovi became the lead singer of a bachata group in Santiago called “Conciencia.” The group recorded music and had acts all over Santiago and Chovi achieved relative fame and success before the group eventually fizzled and broke apart a few years later.
Chovi then moved back to Samana and spent his time singing and dancing in a bachata and merengue group called “Sonido Latino” in various night clubs. Eventually, Chovi left this group and began to pursue his solo career. He dove into several different genres, using his multitude of musical talents to record bachata, urban/modern merengue and mambo, danso, dembow, hip hop/rap, reggaeton, and ballads. Ultimately, Chovi’s heart remains with bachata and merengue, but he loves to try his hand at different genres. Chovi’s fame in the Dominican Republic is on the rise, thanks to a dembow hit featuring fellow Dominican megastar, Pablo Piddy, called “La Envidia” and his humble but loyal fan base. Akino el Chovi has spent his entire life pursuing his musical dreams and feels that now, more than ever, is his time. He will continue to record and display his multidimensional musical abilities in a variety of genres, focusing on songs that showcase his beautiful voice.
