Born and raised in Singapore of Indian-Eurasian heritage, Alemay Fernandez is no stranger to performing since she started at the age of four. Having tackled everything from TV, radio, theater, musicals and even hosting, Alemay’s unmistakeable warmth on stage has made her one of the most unique Singaporean performers in her field.
Most famous for her sultry vocal stylings and gutsy personality, Alemay has enthralled audiences the world over - performing for presidents, politicians, and business moguls alike. Hailed by Timeout Magazine as "One of Singapore's Best-Loved Entertainers", Alemay is a favorite in Singapore's jazz scene. She's performed with Bobby Soul (from the legendary soul group "The Platters") and opened for jazz superstar Laura Fygi. Alemay has also shared the stage with Larry Braggs of Tower of Power, members of the Duke Ellington Orchestra, the Dutch jazz trumpet phenom Saskia Laroo, Justin Faulkner (drummer for Branford Marsalis), Japan's beloved jazz pianist Makoto Ozone, Stanley Banks and Oscar Seaton Jr. (long-time bassist and drummer for George Benson), and many more international musical stars.
Her voice has also been on Singapore movie soundtracks and TV themes, as well as a myriad of commercials.
In 2005, Alemay trained in New York with respected vocal coach Tania Travers and with celebrity vocal coach Dave Stroud the following year. Dave is the Executive Director for The Seth Riggs Vocal Studio. Alemay was one of ten shortlisted Singaporean participants in Grammy Award-winning jazz vocalist Kurt Elling’s masterclass in mid-2008.
Alemay has also been fortunate enough to learn from and perform with legendary musicians who have called Singapore home - the late Michael Stanton (keyboardist and arranger for Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Freddie Hubbard, Natalie Cole and Patti LaBelle) being an especially profound mentor. She is also honored to have worked with the late Eldee Young (of Young-Holt Unlimited and bassist for Ramsey Lewis) as well as Victor Gaskin (bass player in the Thelonious Monk Quartet and best known for being the bassist on Cannonball Adderly /Joe Zawinul's definitive classic "Mercy Mercy Mercy").
Alemay's notably powerful vocals found her invited to perform at the Singtel Singapore F1 Grand Prix 2009 alongside a lineup of artists such as Chaka Khan, Mavis Staples, and Travis. Her skills also came in handy during David Foster's Singaporean performance in late 2010 - he actually asked if there was anyone in the audience who could sing with him! Alemay got to belt out Chaka Khan's "Through The Fire" on stage with David, proving her R&B chops to the world. Alemay was also the artist-of-choice to perform for Paloma Picasso when she was in Singapore celebrating her 30-year jewelry designing partnership with Tiffany’s.
As of 2011, Alemay has just finished a 4-year-long artist-in-residence tenure at Singapore’s leading jazz venue Jazz @ Southbridge. She hosts the “Jazz Giants” audio music program which airs as part of Air China’s in-flight entertainment. "Out of My Head", produced by Dave D'aranjo, is the first step in a long awaited album of original music due to be released this year.
