Alex Pangman

Known to her many loyal fans as Canada’s Sweetheart of Swing, Alex Pangman mines the fertile ground of the 20s, 30s and 40s to breathe new life into the classic jazz songbook.
The Mississauga native released her acclaimed debut CD “They Say” in 1999 and the follow-up “You Can’t Stop Me From Dreaming” two years later, both sets produced by the late guitar legend Jeff Healey, who shared her passion for early jazz. In 2005, she released a Live in Montreal CD with her band the Alleycats and undertook a hectic touring schedule that took her to festival stages, theatres, clubs and television studios across Canada.
The music stopped, however, when Alex, who was born with cystic fibrosis, learned that she needed a double lung transplant. After an agonizing six-month wait, a donor was found and at Toronto General Hospital on November 8, 2008, she received new lungs and a new lease on life.
In spring 2011, the three-time National Jazz Award nominee signed with the prestigious Justin Time Records to release “33”, the CD’s title referring both to her age and to the fact that most of the songs were popular in 1933. Touring resumed, other projects and collaborations blossomed and Alex became a busy advocate for lung research and organ and tissue donation.
She has composed and recorded a special song, “Breathe In”, to benefit the Ontario Lung Association’s research program.
