Born and bred in Scotland, U.K., Alexander Murray grew up with an array of different musical styles which were to heavily influence his own songwriting and sound.
Not one to be labeled or tied down to a particular genre, Alexander's songs concentrate on lyrical content and vocal persuasion, allowing them to develop into whatever they themselves choose to be.
Although his songs deal with experiences that we are all familiar with, he writes both from his own perspective and from that of the protagonists of his songs. “City Streets”, from his album “Unaffected”, for example, was written from the perspective of a homeless person. The poignant lyrics illustrate that not all the choices we make are either correct or easy and will sometimes lead us down the wrong path. “Be My Soul” – also from the “Unaffected” album – speaks from his own heart. He asks of the one who loves him why she remains with him with a thankful chorus that it is not just a matter of being with him but of being part of everything he is.
Inspired by the likes of Bob Dylan, Neil Young and Nick Drake, Murray’s social commentary is as damning as it is enlightening; and like those contemporaries, his acoustic guitar work sets the scene from which to share his insights and thoughts.
His debut album, Unaffected (2007), brings us 10 wonderful songs, all carried out in the traditional acoustic style and takes us on journeys through the heart and soul of the artist, stopping off occasionally to listen to the tales of others. The album has received critical acclaim, both at home and abroad and is a firm favourite of those who like their music acoustic and their lyrics meaningful.
The follow up EP, Animated (2009), is a more pop orientated offering which adds extra life to the 5 songs by including a more 'full band' sound, without detracting from the familiar powerful and heartfelt lyric.
Alexander's latest adventure, the latest album The Company of Equals (2009), lends a more subtle inclusion of instruments to the ear as the 10 songs carry us through further journeys via the well known routes of rock, country, blues and folk.
For those who do not get the opportunity to hear him live, any one of Alexander's CDs would be a worthwhile substitute and would enhance any music lover's collection.
