Andy Units

Hi. I am Andy Units. I am a recording artist, singer, keyboardist, and songwriter. Austin-based and Iowa-born.

What does my music sound like? I am a soul-pop, chamber-pop balladeer. Vocal harmonies with acoustic and electronic instruments in equal measure. Elemental in form, ornate in detail. I’m influenced by solo artists with a strong individual vision, such as Suzanne Vega, David Gray, Peter Gabriel, Kate Bush, John Grant, Vanessa Daou, George Michael, and Seal. R.E.M., too. Their records are self-contained sonic worlds that follow their own passion and logic. That really speaks to me.

And indie music magazine, babysue, adds, “If you dig artists like Andy Pratt, Barry Manilow, Ben Folds, Depeche Mode, and The Bee Gees…and you’d like to get in on the ground floor where a talented new artist is emerging…we would suggest you check [me] out”.

In a nutshell, I love the tension of fusing together economical songwriting craft with very personal, intense emotion, and that is what I strive to achieve in my songs. Aching beauty, too.

What have I done so far? My debut album, Night Light, was released in November 2011. It's a suite of 12 nocturnal pop songs--a meditation on the private world of the night. Dark corners and confessions. The entire album can be streamed from my website, www.andyunits.com. And of course it's available on CD via cdbaby, and as an mp3 download via cdbaby and iTunes.

Fellow recording artist Derek Bishop had this to say about Night Light: "Andy's voice is both soothing and haunting, especially paired with his sultry, interesting compositions and arrangements. His lyrics are wise and intriguing –– filed with emotion. Listening to Andy Units is like being able to truly relax in a dream of lush, smart, tender music. A dream one wants never to end."

What am I doing now? I just completed a new song, "Young Tomorrow," which was commissioned to be the theme of the Sirius/XM talk program The Staying Young Radio Show. And I’m recording a 7-song mini-album, The New Sincerity, set for release in Fall 2013. I am sharing my demos as they progress, again on my website. Plus I am stepping out into the world to perform, as I wish to musically connect with people more directly. See you out there.

Thanks for having a look and a listen.
xo, Andy
