Angela Suarez, daughter of an important industrial executive of the early thirties in the last twentith centry in Medelin, Colombia - became an important artist in the sixties in Medellin and Colombia, recording eight LP’s between 1964 and 1972. She was brave to break conventional ideas about being a woman and a musician in conservative Medellin city. In those days, being a musician was considered culturally to be low and of bad taste. Due to the intimate nature of her music as well as the sophisticated style she developed, Angela performed in various high-class nightclubs around the country and was well received by the audience. Even though she didn’t become an artist of the masses, Angela had a small but true following that looked for her for many years.
After being successful for the first six music albums, her last two albums were not fortunate in the music direction she had from her record company and her albums sales dropped. The early seventies were times of cultural confusion in Colombia. She became discouraged with her career and decided to stop singing. However, in the big picture, she made her dream come true for her and also encouraged all her three sons and one daughter to become artists, which they all did. Luciano Gomez, her oldest son, became a rock & roll musician in London (early seventies) and then a rock star in Colombia; Claudia Gomez devoted to jazz, Brazilian and Colombian folk music in the United States, and has made seven CDs and continues to make music in Colombia. Jaime, her third son, became a blues piano player for several bands in Medellin, although, few years ago he stopped being a musician. Felipe, her youngest, still plays guitar and owns a restaurant in Sint Maarten Island in the Netherlands Antilles.
