Archie Herring wrote The Three Magi: Quest for the Christmas Word, Love and Peace, illustrated by Janis Dougherty and published in 2013, weaving suggestions of Biblical stories into an entirely new tale that focuses on the power of faith and encourages children to practice generosity and kindness.
To celebrate the release of the book, Herring turned to composer William R. Stevens to arrange and record a song, “I Believe in the Three” for the Christmas season of 2013 .
The response to the book and the song was so strong that Herring decided to expand his idea into a full length musical. He and Stevens worked together on additional songs, and Archie created the outline of a larger story.
Stevens’ father, also William Stevens, was brought aboard to create a script.
The three writers, working together, expanded the story, added characters and plot refinements, and augmented the musical score to bring Believe to what you see and hear today.
The title was changed, characters were added, and new scenes were created, but the message remains the same: it’s giving, not getting, that makes a positive impact on the community and the world.
