Grupo ATABAL (or just ATABAL) plays Afro Puerto Rican music emphasizing plena, bomba and salsa. For almost 35 years, this Puerto Rican ensemble has performed throughout the United States, the Caribbean and Europe. They’ve recorded eight independent CDs and are working on a new one.
You can sit to just listen to Atabal but, most probably, you will want to get up and dance to the rhythms of their interpretations of plena, bomba and salsa. The Puerto Rican “pandero” and bomba drums have that effect on listeners. Atabal plays public and private activities and offers plena and bomba workshops.
HÉCTOR RODRÍGUEZ better known as “Héctor Atabal”. He is one of four musicians that started Atabal over 30 years ago. Mainly a Latin percussionist Hector also plays Brazilian pandeiro, berimbao, etc.
CAYMMI RODRIGUEZ is a young upcoming songwriter, percussionist and singer for Atabal. He is the son of Hector Rodríguez – Atabal’s Director and percussionist. He started out as the groups’ band boy, learned the ropes and began playing panderos de plena, bomba drums and singing backup chorus. During the past four years he began as one of the lead singers and is now the lead singer and band administrator.
