In today’s music scene, it’s rare to find a memorable band for both music and performance quality. In January of 2012, Josh (rhythm guitarist of a local ska band) decided it was time to bring back some of the more fun styles of music from the 90s. He started a side project using the styles of pop-punk and his past ska experience to put together their first song, “Chill Out, Dude!” At this time, the band consisted of Josh on vocals and guitar, Matt on rhythm guitar, Greg on bass and Mark on drums. Around this time they realized their little group would need a name; one that would describe their intent of bringing back the music they grew up with (and all the fun they had as kids!). This is the beginning of Backyard Superheroes.
While Matt was the first person to join, Greg and Mark played in a former band with Josh over the previous year. After a few weeks of writing new music, they realized they were missing something. This is when they decided to add some horns to their mix and bring back the punk-ska styles of the 90s. Bands such as Less Than Jake, Reel Big Fish, Rancid and many others contributed to the styles, but they also wanted to add a modern feel to it.
First to join their new lineup was Gary on saxophone. He had a past experience playing in other ska bands and had connections with many local and non-local acts. He brought a new dynamic to the band: the ability to put on a performance that people will never forget. His on-stage antics such as running around the crowd and dancing in the pit with his sax is less of a gimmick and more of a personality trait.
Next addition would be Ryan on trombone. Ryan had no previous experience in ska bands, but it took no time for him to get the feel of things. While he may not be as hyperactive as Gary, he brings different elements to the table. He helped co-write every horn part and provide backup vocals whenever necessary.
Bruce is the final horn player to join the ranks of Backyard Superheroes. A music major from TCNJ, he has his fair amount of experience working in the studio and on stage, but this was his first time participating in a ska project. His trumpet solos, background vocals, and batman cape are always present at live shows and the album and help prove why Bruce is a true Backyard Superhero.
Their first drummer, Mark, decided it was time for a change of scenery, so he moved on to a local jam band with sticks in his hand. At this time Phill Serzan, locally well-known drummer of previous band ‘Almost There’ and student of Streetlight Manifesto’s Chris Thatcher, joined the ranks of the Backyard Superheroes. He brought with him exploding fills and rhythmically incredible beats to make it impossible to stand still during a single song.
On September 23, 2012 the first Backyard Superheroes EP, ‘Falling with Style’ will be released and distributed worldwide. It is a 6 track album containing, amongst the others, the bands hit songs ‘Pop Punk Fairy Tale’ and ‘Chill Out, Dude!’ There is an EP release show planned on September 22, 2012 to release early copies of the album to anyone who comes out.
This is just the beginning of Backyard Superheroes’ story. Stay tuned for the next installment!
