Two years have passed since Blake Miller’s debut release Together with Cats earned the then 19-year-old a 7.4 rating from Pitchfork, and commendations such as, “these songs sound way beyond his limited years” by PopMatters, as well as reviews from publications such as Alternative Press, Silent Uproar, and more. Comparisons at the time ranged from Devendra Banhart, Grizzly Bear, Ron Sexsmith, and the gamut in between.
In the interim two years Blake Miller has continued to record songs at a frightening pace --- primarily alone
and in his bedroom -- all the while honing a more distinctive and personal style that is becoming all the
more difficult to compare to other musicians. More than his unique falsetto (at times approximating
Tim Buckley), multi-tracked vocals, use of “found sounds,” and unique instrumentation, it is Blake’s ability
to surprise the listener with the direction and structure that the songs take that make him an anomaly in an
indie world that is all too often predictable. Rather than proceeding linearly from A to B to C as most songwriters
would, Blake will take you from A to 12 to Z to B to 3…always an adventure!
Burn Tape is a document of Blake’s development over the past two years and his relocation to Portland, Oregon
from Columbus, Ohio; and marks the first installment of frequent cassette / digital releases Exit Stencil plans to release.
