Bobby Akhiyan

I was born in 1982 in the city of Manchester and grew up around a family of musicians.

I first ever appeared live on stage at the age of four where I was asked to sing at a family celebration.

I was given a microphone and supported by my grandfather as well as being accompanied by

the beat of a dholak drum. I performed the song Vadiya Sharabia Ve by Gurdas Maan. Was I nervous? Oh yes very nervous but smashed it.

Since then I have developed the confidence to be a performer by singing to entertain at other family gatherings.

By the age of fifteen I was singing, deejaying and playing the dhol drum at many local events.

I always dreamt of doing something bigger and better than being a local super star, but I guess having these aspirations helped to develop me.

I was seventeen when I was given an opportunity to attend a music workshop at the studios in Gorse Hill Youth Centre in Manchester. Ben Roberts who was the senior engineer of the studio at the time helped me to turn this workshop into an ongoing project. Prior to working on this project I came across an old record in which I found the perfect Punjabi lyrics which I felt that I could rearrange and mix with an upcoming genre of music which was know as UK Garage. After attending several studio sessions we put together an amazing single.

The song Akhiyan Akhiyan was born.

Before I knew it, I was performing Akhiyan Akhiyan at Mela carnivals all over the country. With the single becoming an unreleased anthem, I decided to get together with some friends to release it.

Akhiyan Akhiyan released in September 2001 and Boom! It shortly became a hit with an award winning video that was aired on most Asian TV channels on Sky TV.

At this point my fans gave me the name of Bobby Akhiyan.

The success story continued. It was time to fly to sunny Mauritius to shoot the music videos for my debut album Inspiration. Inspiration released in summer 2003 which included hit tracks Izhaar, Nachna and Marjani.

Where have I been since summer 2003?

Major demand for my deejay roadshow Desi Jockeys grew since the release of both Akhiyan and Inspiration. Work has been going on in the background for something even bigger and better and here it is.
