Bonny James Biography 2013
Stylist pianist, singer songwriter, Bonny James grew up in a middle-class household, surrounded by the sound of her father playing piano. Bonny began playing piano at age five determined to emulate the magical sound of her dad. Still at five years old, she performed in a school play as “Blessed Mother” and knew then that she was destined for the stage. Bonny then took up songwriting and has since amassed a collection of musical works that encompass, classical, folk, rock and rhythm and blues.
Her high school and college years brought an interesting assortment of musical gigs, from coffee houses and political rallies in Austin, Texas, to accompanying high school musicals and church choirs. While embracing a full-time career in music, she worked as a choral director and actor. Graduating from the University of Texas, Austin, with a BA in Music Education, she formed her first band and performed five nights weekly in San Antonio, Texas, Night Clubs.
For Bonny, songs are stories and musicians are storytellers. She sees each song as a story to be told, an experience to be shared. Performing her original music as well as some cover, she is pleasantly surprised when people at her performances specifically request her original songs. “Meet Me In The Meadow” is a local favorite.
Being a native of San Antonio, Texas, some may know her as “Rena”, a stage name given to her when she recorded her first single in the 70’s. Shortly thereafter Bonny headed for Los Angeles, Calif. where she performed on various TV Variety Shows. She sang with, as well as wrote songs for various artists, recording companies, and Television Documentaries, writing everything from commercial jingles to theme songs for movies.
In the early 80’s she formed the band ABBEY ROAD, and performed in Nevada Cabarets and Casinos for twelve years and then at Michelle’s Pub in north San Antonio for three years. The next five years Bonny performed “solo” at the elegant upscale restaurant “La Scala” in Castle Hills, San Antonio.
Currently, Bonny has been on a writing frenzy, again for various projects in San Antonio, as well as her own Original music. Joe Trevino from Blue Cat Studio is Producing her latest Solo CD, yet to be titled, of 1 Cover and 9 Original R&B songs.
Now a sophisticated sultry vocal powerhouse, Bonny explores “The Blues”. She masterfully illustrates some of life's lessons, loves and heartaches with brutal honesty. “Take Good Care of my Heart” pleads for honesty between lovers; and "Malissa Franklin," is the tale of a young woman whose life ends tragically. Bonny’s latest music found on the “No Regrets” CD, released on March 15, 2013, Produced by 4 time Grammy Winner, Joe Trevino of Blue Cat Recording Studio in San Antonio, Texas, will take you on a journey that blends a plethora of styles into a sound that is indeed magical.
