PEOPLE LIKE ME
An album with timeless appeal …
Accomplished Nashville-based singer-songwriter Briana Hardyman, who hails from rural Wisconsin has released her second full-length album following on from her debut solo project, ONLY A DREAM released in 2006. Those who’ve caught Briana during her past two UK tours know that here’s a young lady with a powerful and passionate vocal style. The new album also showcases her talent as a songwriter, with five self-penned songs, including the sultry title song, co-written with album co-producer Mark Elliott. This shows off Briana’s soulful vocal edge, and illuminates her ability to craft poignant poetic lyrics. She possesses a great vocal range, as you can hear on Neverland which shows off the versatility of her catchy melodies. Only Lonely When It Rains is classic country, the kind Nashville’s country mainstream has studiously ignored for years.
She also turns in a stunning rendition of John Prine’s oft-covered Angel From Montgomery. You’ve got to be pretty good to bring something fresh to this song. The same applies to the country-soul classic Do Right Woman, which Briana makes her very own without borrowing anything from the myriad previous versions. Her powerful vocals belt out the melodic lyrics while Tony Harrell’s piano and Russ Pahl’s electric guitar hold solid chord progressions. As accessible and tuneful as all the songs are, it is Alcohol and Pills, an epic song all about the very bedrock of what makes country music such an addictive genre, that makes the biggest impact. A timeless album that we’ll still be raving about ten, twenty maybe even thirty years from now … not so sure that Carrie, Taylor or Kellie will make that kind of lasting impact with their latest albums.
