Brion Riborn

Biography

A singer and songwriter from the Great Lakes State, Brion Riborn (pronounced: bri-uhn rib-awrn) grew up with a young heart and an old soul. Both thoughtful and reckless, his music has been described as a mix between John Mayer and Nirvana. Like the frigid Michigan winters, his art doesn’t shy away from the cold and desolate places that we often stumble into in our separate journeys on this planet. But winters end, and spring is just beneath the surface with a promise of renewal. Riborn makes this apparent throughout his work, often using the dark moments to highlight the lone glimmer of hope.

He’s played everywhere from arenas to house-shows to funerals to coffeehouses. And he likes it that way. To him, every moment is the most important moment. As he puts it, “Whether there be one person or one-thousand people, it’s all about that moment and that time.” And you can sense this at his live shows in the way he interacts with his fans, both during and after the performance.

In December 2007, he released the 5 song EP "Etymbiosis". The following year he started work on a seasonal album that was released as a series of digital singles. However, they are not your typical holiday songs, centered around Christmas and the New Year. "Where Shadows Lie" is an eerie tune released on Halloween that was largely inspired by the writer, JRR Tolkien. "Winter's Last Stand" is a very chilly song that anticipates the arrival of spring. "On Valentine's Day" swells into an anthem of loss and healing, and changes the listener's perspective on what this holiday is all about.

Throughout 2009, Riborn worked on the independent film "Annabelle & Bear". Much of his music is featured on the soundtrack and throughout the film, which debuted in Detroit in February 2010 and continued on the film festival circuit throughout the year.

Riborn recently finished up his latest release, “Mediocrity is an Adequate Lover” which, will doubtfully live down to its name. A complex and dark album, Riborn shows his ability to use contradiction to make sense of things with lyrics like, “To calm me down would take a storm / Just to prove I can take a beating / To wake me up would take a dream / And I'm not sure if I'm even sleeping” in the song “Times That We Forget”. Both retro and modern in sound, the album can be streamed live at his website and is available online in most every way imaginable. Riborn is also known for being a horrible salesman and often gives his albums away for free at live shows. He swears that you make more money that way.
