BIOGRAPHY OF CARLOS PERROTE
PROFESSOR OF MUSIC
Carlos Perrote started his musical studies in 1978 in one of Cuba’s most prestigious Vocational Schools of Art in the city of Guantanamo, with specialty in piano. In 1981 he gained the opportunity to experience his first International tour to Germany through a cultural exchange. After touring, he returned to Cuba to continue his studies in Percussion at the National School of Music in Havana. His participation in various music recitals won him numerous awards. With such great accomplishment he was honored to play in the National Symphony of Cuba in 1984, which again gained him the privilege to tour in France and Italy in 1987.
From 1990 to 1994 Carlos started his Master's studies at the Supreme Institute of Arts, and he attained many awards of merit in different musical recitals. Importantly, he won second place in the Egrem Contest, which is sponsored by one of Cuba’s largest recording studios yearly.
After attaining his Master's Degree in music in 1994, he started to work with the Professional Conservatory and Music School of Arts in Santiago, Cuba. Carlos conducted many musical recitals and workshops, and he worked with various youths and international students who travelled to Cuba for training. After this, he went on various tours both locally and internationally with his own musical group in 1995. During that time Carlos had the privilege to work and play with some of Cuba’s best known Musicians, such as Chucho Valdes, Cesar Lopez, and Ramon Valles, who were idols to most of Cuba’s upcoming musicians.
In 1998 Carlos represented Cuba in Mexico at various festivals and workshops. In 1999 he was given the opportunity to come to Belize in a cultural exchange between Belize and Cuba.
During his time here in Belize, he worked for three months as an advisor to the Belize Arts Council music program, before returning home to Cuba. In Belize he met his wife, to whom he is now married for ten years. Carlos returned to Belize in September of 1999 to make Belize his home.
In 2000, after establishing himself within the music climate here in Belize, he decided to produce his first Album “Twin Boy,” a variety of jazz compositions with a taste of ballads, Latin jazz, fusion rock, and afro-punta styles.
This astonishing and remarkable musician, composer and arranger, Mr. Carlos Perrote, has inspired many Belizean musicians with his great talent. His contribution in the field of music has played a major role within the Belize community, and he is also a role model to most of his music students as well as other musicians.
With his continuous contributions to the Belize Music Industry, he has worked as an itinerant music teacher for the Institute of the Creative Arts (NICH), and presently he is the Musical Director of the Grace Primary Music School and the Holy Redeemer Marching Band. Professor Carlos is always trying something new and different in music.
In 2005 Carlos again had the privilege to work and tour along with Andy Palacio and the Garifuna Collective. He also had the pleasure of sharing this project (“Omolewa Osain”) in the beginning stage with Andy, to whom this Album is dedicated.
Carlos' accomplishments in music have earned him the respect of other Belizean musicians. And, as he continues to represent Belize with various musical groups both locally and internationally, he will always be considered one of Belize’s greatest assets in the music industry and the community as a whole.
