"HONKYTONK HELLCAT" BY CHRIS COX
Some people choose a small town country life. Some people want to live in the big city. Sometimes a person might even choose to become a singer or a musician & hit the travelin trail...
Chris Cox was born, “on the road...” ;)
Chris was born to Cecil & Linda Cox, in Fayetteville, AR in 1971.
His Father was a road Sales Manager for a large corporation at the time, They stayed in Fayetteville just about long enough to get Chris home from the hospital, and then they were “On the road again...” :)
From about age 2 Chris was constantly on the road with his Dad, Cecil Cox. From Montana to New York & everywhere in between, Chris traveled more of this great country with his Dad before age 5 than most ever get to see!
The Grandson of an American Hero, Merrill's Marauder, Sgt. Cecil Leo Cox, (WWII / C.B.I. Theater, MARS Task Force, Korea) and Nephew to both Vietnam Veteran Franklin Cox & Fmr. Guantanamo-Bay Navy Serviceman Lewis Cox, Chris has always been grateful for & aware of how lucky he is to live in this great land we call the USA! & that Freedom always comes with the Highest of Costs... The lives of Brave U.S. Servicemen & Women.
At age 6 Chris already knew he loved to sing. While he had begun singing in church at age 4, The first song he ever sang in a Public venue was the National Anthem at a Football Game in his Hometown of Jay, Oklahoma.
With no formal training in music or performing, Chris stunned the audience with a mature & polished performance of this very difficult song that had the crowd enraptured!
After the song, the audience erupted in applause... No one could believe the size & quality of his voice at such a young age. Everyone knew there were going to be big things to come in Chris's musical future.
He grew up like a lot of country kids in the 70's & 80's... ridin broncs & bikes, playin football & impressin the girls. Skinned up knees, copenhagen & fishin poles... Going to school, or hangin out with his younger brother Jason and his sisters, Kim & Kesha, listening to & singing together all the incredible music of those times.
But there was one constant with Chris. He was ALWAYS singing...
In the shower, on the way to school, while he did his work, ridin in the truck, anywhere he could(which was just about anywhere he found himself at the time!)
He came from a musically talented family as well. There was always music on the radio at home. As they went on vacation trips in the family van, they would sing along with the country hits of the time, like “You're The Reason God Made Oklahoma”. Sometimes in 3 & 4 part harmony with each other! Family, & love of music was a constant force in Chris's life as he grew up.
He continued to grow in Musical experiences as he performed in School musical groups, sang in contests, at football games and even in the Oklahoma All-State Choir his Senior Year in High School. He was the 9th ranked Operatic Tenor in The State of Oklahoma when he accepted a Music Scholarship to The Oklahoma State Univ. college Of Music.
But he soon discovered that the, “Opera School”, as he put it, just wasn't his bag o' tricks...
So he dropped out.... and went back on the road with his Dad.
They worked together for the next few years building and expanding their family's Fireworks Business which Helps Nonprofit School Groups raise funds for school activities throughout Oklahoma & Texas. At one point building the business to over 170 retail locations!
But Chris always had a yearning to perform that just wouldn't go away...
He performed in Karoeke Clubs and entered contests, & would ask to sit in with bands on nights off wherever the road had ended up for them that week in their travels.
He even hung out with Toby Keith a little in the early days when Toby was playin clubs in Oklahoma City!
After a few years on the road working the family business and a brief stint in Los Angeles, Chris decided it was time for a change. He moved home & started writing songs & performing music again... “I was just a country boy at heart, and was missin the plains of Central Oklahoma and the 'Green Country' hills of my youth, & writing country music keeps me constantly grounded & connected to all that...”
He was searching for his roots... So he came home to Oklahoma. He learned again first hand about the tragedies of living in this modern world & how important it is to live for the present, and never let the words I love you fall silent from your lips, as he experienced things like hearing & feeling the bomb explode at the Murrah Building in Downtown Oklahoma City, and when he saw and took shelter from the Huge May Tornado that affected so many lives & took his Uncle Frank's & so many others' homes and lives during those incredibly tragic events.
He continued to study music & theater at Oklahoma State University, married and was blessed with a beautiful daughter, Cassadi.
“No matter what had ever happened to me in this life, or whatever I may have experienced before or since, Nothing prepared me for how much love I felt the first moment I held my baby girl in my arms.” said Chris.
When Cassadi was born, he started focusing more on building his family business again to create a secure future for his daughter, but continued to sing and write songs, honing his craft for the day he would “try my hand at performing again” as he put it.
Until a star-crossed meeting took place in the most unlikely of places...
A Heart Hospital.
Chris's Dad Cecil met Grand Ole Opry Legend, Walt Wilder, while waiting for a doctor's appointment. They began talking about Walt's career with the Grand Ole Opry and Cecil mentioned that his son had such a voice that sometime he couldn't tell if it was the radio or his kid! 'Well”, Walt said gruffly,“Why don't you bring him by next week & we'll see if he can sing.”
After one meeting with Chris, Walt had a session scheduled in Nashville to record Chris singing with Grand Ole Opry Musicians within three months!
Chris' first album 'Heaven To Win” Not only Featured Grand Ole Opry talent... It Aired in over 35 Countries Globally! It Received a glowing recommendation from John Lund at LundRadioConsultants in San Francisco, as an “Artist To Watch” in 2014! It also had 2 SINGLES HIT THE TOP TEN IN EUROPE IN 2014!!!
Competing week after week against HUGE acts!!! Such as Lady Antebellum, Luke Bryan, Toby Kieth, Eric Church, Garth Brooks, Hunter Hayes, and many more!! “Heaven To Win” also made the Independent Music Charts in the USA as well!!! putting Chris in the unique position of having A CHARTING SINGLE ON 2 CONTINENTS AT THE SAME TIME!
Unfortunately, tragedy was waiting to strike in the middle of Chris's newfound musical success... after only a little over one year of working with him... His mentor, partner & friend, Walt Wilder, passed away at the same Hospital where he and Chris's Dad had met the year before. Through shining eyes, Chris related the story of Walt Wilder's passing... “A true Gentleman & a Prince of a man has fallen”, He said, “The greatest thing I ever learned from working with Walt was to never give up. He never for one second quit living his dream. Right to the very end, He was takin' phone calls from Nashville, New York & Europe. Doing deals with the CMA & Global Music Contacts to help further my career. I'll never forget him. He gave me the shot I had always hoped for, but so much more than that... He was my friend.”
Continuing Walt Wilder's Legacy of producing Great Independent Country Music with the Finest Talent Nashville has to offer, has become a lifelong passion for Chris Cox. He's committed himself to this goal by buying Walt's Record Label, “CMMRecords”, from his widow, Carol Rodden and resuming recording project operations with hot New Nashville Talent! .......Fall 2015
