Cool Beat Borscht is the band working on the plan to take over the world with its unique brand of jazz! The blend of influences from each of the band members (including but not limited to Gyspy jazz, rock and music from around the world) allows the band the opportunity to stretch musical boundaries with each other which, of course, is great fun! CBB is comprised of Tom Moose on guitar, Ira David Miller on drums and April Fletcher on bass. Tom and April met when vocalist Monique Debose asked them to play in her band. Still short a drummer, April brought in Ira who she’d met through mutual friends from college.
And so began the pre-borscht brew….
Several years after the project with Monique, the band was still playing together – jamming on occasion (in the basement of Ira and April’s house aka The House of a Thousand Stairs). With a genuine like for each other and admiration of each other’s take on music, the three decided to be a trio. One evening Tom called April from a deli in Los Angeles and mentioned the ‘beet borscht’ he saw on a sign in the restaurant. Most likely after a usual run of jokes and play on words, Cool Beat Borscht arrived from the depths of the beet borscht in the deli.
Along with their book of standards, the trio continues to develop its own style and piece of the jazz pie by adding originals to its repertoire. Now, in 2012, Cool Beat Borscht will be releasing its debut full-length album of original material, entitled “Savannah Sessions.” The group recorded in Savannah, Georgia at Elevated Basement Studios. Engineered by Miles Hendrix and mixed by Kevin Rose.
There will be more Borscht to follow….
