Formed in 2001, Crooked Mouth is the recording project of guitarist/songwriter Ken Campbell.
Based in Edinburgh, Scotland, Crooked Mouth has, somehow, managed to maintain a pulse over 14 years and 3 albums. In that time we've seen some changes in membership. For the latest release, One Bright Midnight, Campbell’s guitars are joined by Kenny Haig (Lead Vocals), Ali Mitchell (Keyboards), Tony Hodge
(Drums), Leen (Bass), Eilidh Maclean (Backing vocals) and Lynne Campbell (Backing vocals).
As you might expect, the musical influences at work among that many people are varied, encompassing hard rock, progressive metal (Tony & Leen are the rhythm section of Edinburgh metalists, Abandoned Stars), traditional acoustic styles, the film scores of the two Johns - Barry and Carpenter - and many stages in between.
For want of a genre, some have called Crooked Mouth 'progressive rock' and others 'post-prog'. That's as maybe, although many have struggled to find some
common ground when comparing the band with others in the same space. We like to think of that as a sign of musicians determined to shape their own sound.
Anyway, all this talk of genres is boring. Here's how some nice reviewers have described it:
Prog at its most eclectic and musicianly
- Geoff Barton, Classic Rock
Songs of the highest quality...superb symphonic prog
- Steve Mourton, Rock Society Magazine
Highly recommended for those who like the energy and innovation of more modern
bands, mixed with a symphonic progressive sensibility
- Brian G, Progressive Ears
An eclectic mix of post-modern, art, and progressive rock, with an undercurrent of
haunting ambient electronics
- Joseph Shingler, ProgNaut
Carefully crafted, intelligently written songs, with lyrics that are both attentive and
- Bob Mulvey, DPRP
