"From small beginnings come great things"
Hailing from the 'smallest' county in Ireland, self-taught musician, singer-songwriter, Damien Nash, aims to prove there is truth in this old saying. The Co. Louth native has developed a unique music style, distinctive and yet difficult to label. His rhythmic guitar based melodies draw on influences as diverse as Elvis Presley, Jeff Buckley and Ray Charles, while audiences have compared his passionate vocals to a range of artists from a young David Bowie to Paolo Nutini and Cat Stevens. Damien only recently decided to pursue music full-time and since 2011 he has been busking, gigging, writing and recording, all of which has led to his debut EP 'Perched'. While listening to Perched you will find yourself in a mix of 1950's soul tucked up in some blues, caressed with sensitive melodies and occasionally coated with a provocative edge. Two tracks from the EP, "Let Me Try" and "Mechanical Love", have been receiving airtime in the U.K, Ireland and on radio in Miami, Florida, with 'Outloud Media'. They have since used his tracks for the intro/outro to their new podcast show along with having "Let Me Try" available for download from their website.
"Damien Nash's lyrics are catchy and at times heart-wrenching. His
vocals make you want to lie on your sofa wrapped in a sweater on a
rainy night with a glass of wine. His talent is truly something to relish"
~Leah S. Pritchett, Editor, "Outloud!!!"
Damien's EP "Perched" was released 31/03/13. He has recently been on air for interviews with Dublin's Radio Nova, Downtown Radio's Drive Time with George Jones and Dundalk Fm with more to follow. Promotion of Perched is the focus for the start of this year but his sights are firmly set on recording his debut album later in the year. Perched is the culmination of Damien's musical journey thus far. That journey has been as a solo artist but "Perched" has been written as a full band sound and although he will continue to play gigs with his trusted guitar Jane the full band sound will be coming to live audiences by June of this year.
Damien has always had an interest in music from an early age leaving his influences many and varied. His pre-teens were dominated by a love for Buddy Holly, the Beach Boys, the Kinks, Motown and early memories of Stevie Wonder rocking it up on his piano. As he grew older, Rock, Indy and Grunge began to take over with Radiohead, the Frames, Live, Led Zepplin, Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam, the Doors and Nirvana all being favourites. Damien began playing guitar at 15 and so began a fascination with all things 'Jeff Buckley'. Damien still feels a great affinity with Buckley's life and when you get the chance to watch his live set you may catch him performing Jeff's version of "The way young lovers do". The onset of his early twenties and studying Sound Engineering at S.T.C (Sound Training Center), Dublin, saw an additional influence in the form of electronic music with the likes of Kosheen, Prodigy and Massive Attack receiving lots of playing time in his headphones. In recent years his passion for soul and blues has been re-ignited.
Being so used to playing acoustic guitar many of the songs on "Perched" started out as such but Damien always had a craving to hear a bigger sound. Initially, with a lack of funds and no recording facilities, these sounds formed, and remained, in his mind only, until the purchase of an 8-track recorder in early 2011 allowed for the tracks to be brought to life in their full glory. It took him the guts of a year to really figure out what he was looking for in terms of styles, rhythms, instruments and melodies before perfecting the tracks on stage (e.g. Temple House Music Festival, Sligo; The Spirit Store, Dundalk; Bruxelles, Dublin), on the streets busking (Dublin; London; Firenze; New York City) and, finally, recording. His love for the raw recordings of David Kitt and Bon Iver inspired him to record this EP in a makeshift home studio which leaves 'Perched' sounding deeply rustic and natural.
