Dan Aston

I started playing guitar around the age of nine when I was at primary school. Classical guitar was my starting point and I attended weekly classes and ensembles at my school and in my local area before studying privately where I learned in depth techniques and began to target musical grades. When I was fourteen I got my hands on my first electric guitar. My black Ibanez SA Series became my main axe throughout my remaining years at school and college and has been well gigged with my first rock bands. Inspired by the likes of David Gilmour, Gary Moore, Ritchie Blackmore and Paul Kossoff, I developed my guitar playing aiming to find my own sound and feel. I obtained two further electric guitars to my arsenal: a red faded Gibson Flying V and a white Fender Standard Stratocaster HSS. I wrote and toured with these two for a while before deciding to step into what would be uncharted territory for me and become a singer songwriter.

I have always had a love for folk music and some of my key musical influences lie with artists such as John Martyn, Nick Drake, Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan. I began writing solo material, blending my classical guitar capabilities on acoustic guitar with my other tastes to stretch towards my own musical direction. As far as acoustic music goes, I have strong influences in other genres and artists that stretch beyond folk. Progressive Rock and Metal is a genre that I listen to a lot, and I admire bands such as Opeth, Porcupine Tree and Anathema immensely for their creative use of light and shade, or the blending of Acoustic Folk and Heavy Metal as it can be alternatively described. My musical influences are very diverse and I hope this will show in my original material as I progress as an artist.

I currently live in Cornwall where I gig regularly and also teach guitar privately. Check out the music section on this site to hear some of my original material, or come and see me on the road!

All the best,

Dan.
