Artistic path...

Denyse Marion (Deneece) was born in Chicopee, Massachusetts, U.S.A., of a Franco-American Father and a French Canadian Mother. She came to live in Quebec at 6 years of age. As a little girl, she enjoyed humming, inventing melodies and imitating the great names of the American/Canadian musical culture. At 12 years of age, Denyse took pop singing classes. In high school, her friends requested (or insisted) that she sing for them between classes, during evening gatherings and celebrations. At that time she also enjoyed singing Rock music.

Once in College, studying Graphic Design, she made friends with a little group of musicians in training at the school and together they performed at different shows. “It was in that moment that I decided to pursue my training in classical singing to improve my vocal technique,” she explains. “I did this for three years. We would go to the Montreal Botanical Garden and we would sing in the Grand Hall without a microphone. It was really enjoyable.” She was also a young vocal student of the African American Jazz singer and EMI artist, Jeri Brown, originally from St. Louis Missouri, who was then teaching from her home in Montreal. Her approach to vocal style and performance was very different from what Deneece has previously studied. Greatly encouraged and supported by this Jazz music icon, Denyse Marion pursued her training with her for two years. Afterwards, she studied in vocal, microphone, stage presence and theatre techniques, as well as dance and song-writing techniques at ‘Prochant’, known to be the largest educational institution in the field of music and song in Canada. She then went on to complete her education in musical theory through night classes at the University of Montréal.

Ready for the show-business train...

“I have waited a long time for my turn to come”, she states with a bit of deception in her gaze. “At 30 years of age, a door opened to me at Sony Music after one of my performances at la Petite Licorne in Montréal. However, my ambition to sing in the r n’b-soul-funk musical style did not entirely reflect Sony’s vision for me. Thirteen years later, I feel more ready than ever to jump on the show-business train!” This has been a period of time that has allowed Deneece to acquire musical maturity, gained through her countless musical experiences. She has done jingles, studio recordings, appeared regularly at the Lake Leamy Casino in Gatineau, Quebec over a period of 7 years and even more. She also leads another career, in addition to being a singer-performer, to earn her living.
