Derrick Givens started singing and acting at the age of 8 years old. As a member in his grammar school’s singing club, Derrick’s music teacher quickly noticed his enthusiasm for singing, dancing and acting. Derrick along with his twin brothers and sister were immediately enrolled in The Al Fann Theatrical Ensemble School in New York City whose members included Kim Fields, Danielle Spencer and Gary Coleman. Derrick starred in several commercials as a child while he and his brothers and sister formed a singing group aptly named “The Givens Kids”. This led to an appearance on the Television sitcom “The What’s Happening Show” as well as starring in several off- Broadway shows along with child actresses Janet Jackson and Kim Fields.
The Givens Family traveled throughout the United States and the Caribbean and appeared on local and national television. Derrick and his family also appeared on Stevie Wonders “Songs in the Key of Life” LP, The Walt Disney Recording of “When You Wish Upon a Star” and have performed voice-overs in the movie “The Wiz” starring Diana Ross and Michael Jackson. The Givens Family also released several albums gaining favorable national critic reviews
Derrick enjoys songwriting and has written several tunes for legendary Jazz and R&B artist George Benson, Cuba Gooding, Sr. former Disco/House music Queen Gwen Guthrie.
His most recent accomplishments includes writing and singing Club/ R&B and Pop music, one of which reached number 5 on the European Club Charts in 2008. Derrick is currently working towards the release of his forthcoming debut CD.
