BIOGRAPHY
Derwin Woods was born in Pittsburgh, PA but his mother moved him to Los Angeles, CA when he was around 11 years old. Those who knew Derwin as a youngster saw that his passion for singing was real and by the time he was in his teens, his voice had become very powerful with a range that exceeded four octaves.
Through a mutual friend, Derwin met James Carloss. The two of them began making plans to do music together while they were in their teens. After Derwin graduated from high school they formed a band that would eventually be called Rapture. James, a former drummer, had now switched to guitar and was writing songs.
Rapture entered a four song production deal with former Motown producer, Lamont Dozier. One of the songs was written by James and sung by Derwin. The two have been working on studio projects together ever since.
Derwin’s music palette is very diverse. He is capable of handling different styles like R&B, Gospel, Rock, and Jazz. His influences include Stevie Wonder, George Duke, Chick Corea, Bobby McFerrin, Luther Vandross, The Beatles, Fred Hammond, The Winans Family, and way too many other artists to mention here.
Over the years, Derwin has continued to evolve as a vocalist and songwriter while James has concentrated on songwriting and production. These two have been in the studio together so many times that they can practically read each other’s musical thoughts.
James is currently producing songs on Derwin that will soon appear on upcoming projects. Please take the time to listen to and enjoy the God given talents of Mr. Derwin Woods.
