D'Orchestra is the latest project from Jesse Shepherd-Bates, one of Detroit's many talented songwriters and musicians. Shepherd-Bates has been a staple of the Detroit music scene for a decade, playing in bands such as The Satin Peaches, The Hounds Below, Jesse and The Gnome, Mick Bassett and The Marthas, and the massive JSB Squad. D'Orchestra is a vehicle for Shepherd-Bates to put down the electric guitar and focus on the heart of the songs, through deeper composition and subject matter.
"Prelude" is D'Orchestra's debut album. Shepherd-Bates first started recording sketches of the tracks in 2010, finally completing the album in late 2012. Produced by Topher Horn, with appearances from Will Shattuck, Adam Padden, and George Morris, the album features a collection of Shepherd-Bates' most honest songs to date. The songs are layered with acoustic guitars, mandolins, pianos, and whatever else Shepherd-Bates and Horn could get their hands on. Highlights include the yearning "Little White Lies", the old timey "Be On Your Way", and the album's lone instrumental track, "Tagalong".
