Doug de Vries
Jazz, classical and Brazilian guitar styles inform Doug de Vries' mastery of his instrument; excelling as composer and guitar player in many genres from jazz to choro, samba and bossa nova, and is considered Australia’s leading exponent of Brazilian guitar repertoire.
His sophisticated accompaniments, deep knowledge and daring improvisations in jazz and other musical languages – on solo guitar and with ensembles – have won him popular and critical acclaim and the recently released CD 'DdV solo' features the intricacy of his compositions and the virtuosity of his playing. Doug de Vries is regularly invited to music festivals; a recent highlight the 2010 Adelaide International Guitar Festival where he featured with Yamandu Costa, and a concert series in Rio de Janeiro - featuring composers of contemporary choro - to be held in 2012.

Syd Morning Herald REVIEW - four stars
Melbourne's Doug de Vries can seemingly play anything. Regardless of the band in which he appears, he can steal a show with a segment of solo acoustic guitar, and here he gives us a whole album of that. He has especially immersed himself in the guitar artistry of Brazil, where rhythmic fluidity meshes with high drama and unabashed passion.
These qualities surge through the speakers as de Vries realises 15 short pieces, mostly by himself, with nods to the work of such heroes as Baden Powell and Egberto Gismonti. His articulation is very clean, without being clinical, and he has enough of a story-teller's flair to keep each piece engaging, and to prevent the whole becoming too samey. Superb.
