It all started in May 2003. A very hot pre-summer day in a badly air conditioned underground shelter with the intensions to create heavy, ambient, melodicious music. What came out was something that’s often referred to as post rock..
Many bands are usually mentioned when people try to describe the sound of ef. The band itself want the music to speak it own language. ef want to give the audience a chance to hear, feel and determine by himself – without putting thoughts or opinions in their mind.
ef create their beautiful and majestic soundscapes with three guitars, bows, strings, tons of effects, glockenspiel, laptops, melodica, horns and many more instruments. It’s all topped with tender and fragile vocal parts, which acts more like yet another instrument instead of the spitting out old clichés.
The band have released a bunch of records since the start. First came 4 self produced demos (can be found all over internet), one 7” singel (Jezebel Recordings 2005) and two full length albums (via And the Sound Records): 2006’s critically acclaimed ”Give me beauty… Or give me death!” and the sophomore follow up ”I am responsible” that came in 2008. The very same year the ”Hello Scotland Remixed EP” was released where they’ve worked with Stafraenn Haakon, Isan, Uzi & Ari, Euphoria, Patrik Torsson och Corwood Manual.
Nowadays ef counts like one of Europes hardest working post rock bands, with endless of miles spent on the roads. Playing live is one of the biggest strength of the constellation. They’ve done 9 tours totally and shared stages with giants like: The Album Leaf, Red Sparowes, This Will Destroy You, Aereogramme, Gregor Samsa, 65 Days of Static, Lampshade, Lack och Unwed Sailor. They’ve also attended some festivals, like Music in Mind (Brugge, BE), Virus (Eindhoven, NL), End Pilot (Erfurt, DE), PopUp (Leipzig, DE), Frizon (Örebro, SWE) and Formanova (Frederica, DK). During one of their tours in 2007 they did a live radio session in Studio Brussel (biggest radio station in Belgium) and the program Duyster.
ef will start to record their 3rd album in October 2009 together with producer Magnus Lindberg of Cult of Luna. The recording will take place in highly beneficiate studio Music A Matic in Göteborg, Sweden where bands like Soundtrack of our Lives, The Knife, Kent and many many others have recorded their albums.
Quote: “Trying to find any other word than 'moving' to describe Ef's debut is something I've been struggling with these past few days. With a wide arrangement of instruments to use at their discretion, they've constructed a sublime collection of post-rock that's as forceful as it is grounding.” - Phil Del Costello, Itsatrap.com
Quote: “Give Me Beauty…Or Give Me Death! is pretty much everything awesome about the genre, rolled up into a concise and nearly perfect 55-minute record. “, “In fact, these seven Swedes have created the most well-paced and exciting post-rock record since The Earth Is Not a Cold Dead Place.” – (4.5/5) Dan Perrone, Punknews.org
Quote: “I Am Responsible is post-rock through and through, from the development of the melodies to the progression of the guitar riffs and tones. “, “Their tagline on their Myspace and motto “emotions, explosions, energy” is completely applicable. It says everything about the band you need to know. This Gothenburg group seems to know exactly how to get people’s attention and keep it, yet in a cloak/dagger sort of way at times.”
