Founded in 1990 by siblings Mildred and Ivar Herrera (on vocals and percussion, respectively) and Rogelio Guisao (on Cuban tres), El Sson de Mildred has been captivating audiences throughout Colombia since its inception in the mountain city of Medellín (Colombia). The group's music directly reflects its leaders' cultural backgrounds, exploring and fusing styles ranging from Colombia's cumbia, vallenato and chalupa rhythms to Cuba's, son, bolero and guaguancó. In addition to being a fixture in Medellín's artistic calendar, El Sson de Mildred has also served as musical training ground for some of Colombia's finest young musical talent with former members going on to perform with artists of the caliber of international pop sensation Juanes and salsa legend Diego Galé.
In crafting El Sson de Mildred's debut album, producers Felipe Alzate and Alberto López (with credits including Juanes, Rubén Blades, Celia Cruz and Lee Ritenour among them) combined the experience and maturity of the group's original three members with the excitement brought by some of Medellín and Los Angeles' most talented young performers, some of which actively perform with the likes of Fanny Lu, Stevie Wonder, Macy Gray and Poncho Sanchez. Finishing touches were administered by Grammy and Emmy Award winning engineer Joel Soyffer. The result is a sound that mixes traditions from yesteryear with the raw energy of today's styles in a timeless infusion to be enjoyed by all.
