Esmerelda Strange

Esmerelda Strange was born in a broken down 20 foot box truck lined with purple cardboard fruit packing containers for soundproofing in the Bayview disttrict of San Francisco CA. She had been inspired by the long tradition of one man bands in street performing, the circus , and rock and roll. Having no formal training in anything, and inspired by every punk band ever, Esmerelda strapped an accordion to her chest ,sat down on a friends drum kit and began writing and recording songs.
The band was raised up in the warehouses and empty lots of the Bay Area where circus, machine art, punk rock, and bad ideas intersect. She wrote and performs the music for the Lifesize Mousetrap (www.lifesizemousetrap.org) , a 50,000 pound Rube Goldberg machine that resembles the classic kids board game.
She has opened for and toured with Cyclecide (www.cyclecide.com), the worlds only punk rock Bicycle Carnival with pedal powered midway rides.
She has also been the back up band for a number of sideshow performers on the street and stage.
She has been called an art-carnie more than once.
When asked to describe her music Esmerelda will usually say “I’m playing everything at the same time. It’s whatever I can get out”
Other people have described it as
"...eerie and evocative aggressive accordion based funk folk"
“Angrily played ommpah beaten uncomfortably together with rock and polka and gypsy folk”
"acoustic electro-clash goes to the punk rock circus in Mexico."
Esmerelda is truly one of a kind. In her own words: “my act is so weird and rare I might as well be a unicorn”
