Flash, aka Lewis Flinn, is an American composer for television, theater, film, and concert works. Lewis Flinn’s current musical projects include; Give It Up! , with book by Douglas Carter Beane; On Girl, with book and lyrics by Steven Sater; Like Love, with book/lyrics by Barry Kaplan (producer Dennis Grimaldi, NYMF 2007, Drama League New Works award) ; The Winner, with Joe Sutton (the Lyric Stage, Dallas 2007, Dramatist Guild Reading series, National Music Theater Network); ; and Down There, with book/lyrics by Brian Crawley (NAMT/Gilman Gonzalez-Falla developmental grant recipient 2007). He and Brian Crawley contributed a song, “Little While Lies”, to the 2005 Drama Desk Nominated musical, The Audience. His songs have been recorded by many artists, including Jennifer Holliday, and were recently featured in Lincoln Center’s American Songbook series.
He has also composed scores and songs for over 50 productions, working with directors Scott Ellis, Mark Brokaw, Chris Ashley, Ron Lagomarsino, and Peter Askin among others. He recently wrote the music for Douglas Carter Beane’s Broadway play The Little Dog Laughed, and Charles Busch’s Die Mommie Die and The Third Story. Other theaters include Second Stage Theater (The Little Dog Laughed, Show People, Privilege, Good Boys And True), Playwright’s Horizons ( The Busy World Is Hushed, Plunge), Drama Dept (Mondo Drama, Music From a Sparkling Planet ), Lincoln Center Theatre (Wendy Wasserstein’s Old Money), The Vineyard Theater, Geffen Playhouse (LA) (Looking for Normal), Hartford Stage (Comedy of Errors), Cleveland Play House (6 Productions) , Old Globe (San Diego), , Primary Stages, adobe theatre co (Orpheus & Eurydice), and the Acting Company. In addition, he has been a guest artist at Cornell, Dartmouth, and Princeton University.
In the world of TV and film, he recently wrote the music for “The Power of 10” with Drew Carey for CBS/Sony and “Million Dollar Password” with Regis Philbin, also for CBS. His numerous commercial scores include campaigns for Microsoft, Life Cereal, SAAB, and the AFL-CIO. He has written scores for films which have debuted at Sundance and the Hamptons film festivals. A longtime collaborator with fashion designer Zang Toi, he has composed and performed runway music for over 14 collections. Two CD’s of these songs have been released under the pseudonym “Flash” and are favorites in the NY club scene. He was lead singer and songwriter for the 90’s jazz/rock band Acoustic Blue. A cum laude graduate of Princeton University and Phillips Exeter Academy, he has received awards and grants from ASCAP, Meet the Composer, A.S.K. Theatre Projects, the Drama League, the National Music Theatre Network, The Dramatist Guild, and the National Foundation for the Advancement of the Arts.
