Gabriel Barcenilla

Gabriel Jedzimir Lee Barcenilla is a Filipino and Chinese pop and R&B singer, dancer, and songwriter. Gabriel Barcenilla was born on November 12, 1992 in Manila, Philippines and was raised there until he was 6 years old. During his childhood, Hedelisa Sorrera , his Grandmother, played a variety of music such as Frank Sinatra, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, and OPM. Hedelisa introduced dancing to a young Gabriel by slow dancing with him around the living room while listening to her favorite artists. Whenever Michael Jackson was playing, Gabriel would dance around the room and do the moonwalk, which he learned by watching Michael on television. Gabriel Barcenilla’s mother and father, Lilibeth Lee Barcenilla and Rogelio Padla Barcenilla Jr, both former Olympian chess players, decided to have a fresh start by moving to Chandler, Arizona in 1999. In so doing, young Gabriel was exposed to the American culture encompassing different types of food, people, and especially music. Gabriel did not have any aspirations as a child to have a musical career because of the lack of confidence in him and shyness. He didn’t recognize his vocal abilities until the age of 14 when he performed at Perry High School’s first annual talent show, of which became a confidence booster for the young singer. With the encouragement from family, friends, and schoolmates, Gabriel decided to pursuit his dream of being a pop superstar. He received his first recording microphone at the age of 15. In addition to singing, this led to other opportunities to develop other artistic abilities such as music production and song-writing. He wrote his first single “Frozen” in the following week. He continued to develop his song-writing skills by studying lyrics online focusing on how verses, hooks, and choruses transitioned. Also, he watched tutorials on how to record music and how to master vocals. Along the way, Gabriel made a Youtube channel named Gabreezy1 and signed up for other sites to promote his passion for music. After graduating from high school, his parents wanted him to invest more time with his music career, so they took him back to the Philippines in the summer of that year to get professional voice lessons. During the stay in the Philippines, he was mentored by Moy Ortiz from the group “The Company.” With two months of training in the Philippines, Gabriel’s vocal range and control had increased. Back in Arizona with more confidence and experience, he has been uploading more videos of him singing, dancing, and producing more originals. Through the heartbreaks and experiences of a young teenager, his life story has been the gear driving the mechanics in producing his song lyrics. Very eager to make a new song, Gabriel got in his studio and produced a theme song called “Barcenalien .” The song talks about him being different because of the kinds of clothes he wears. The word “Barcenalien” is Gabriel’s last name and the world alien combined to produce a noun made up by him to define how out of this world a person is. Gabriel said, “I love telling people it is okay to show and be your true self because everyone has the power to make a difference in society and in others by showing how to lead your own legacy.
