Gianna Abondolo

The L.A. Times has described Gianna Abondolo's playing as "world class, exceptional and exquisite". Top prize winner of the 1988 Young Musician's Foundation Debut Competition, she gave her New York solo debut performance in 1991 at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall and subsequently following, won a position with the L.A. Philharmonic Orchestra with whom she played for four years. She leads a dynamic career performing regularly as soloist, chamber musician, improviser, and composer, thrilling audiences throughout the U.S. and abroad. She has played in festivals such as Marlboro, Tanglewood, Steamboat Springs, Santa.Clara Univ. New Music Fest., Other Minds SF, the Santa Barbara Academy of the West, and the Accademia Chigiana in Siena, Italy. A member of the SF based new music ensemble Adorno, she has also played with the SF Contemporary Music Players, and as principal cellist of the New Century Chamber Orchestra, the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra, and the Berkeley Akademie, among others. Of her performance of Messiaen’s solo movement for cello and piano from his Quartet for the End of Time, David Bratman from the San Francisco Classical Voice wrote: “Ms. Abondolo emerged in her solo as a lyrical performer with a judicious delicacy”. Ms. Abondolo has appeared in the Bay Area on the concert series’ of Old First Church, Hertz Hall at UC Berkeley, Mills College, Music at the Mission (San José), San Francisco Contemporary Players, Noe Valley Ministry and the Gold Coast Chamber Players. Among the many works by contemporary composers she has performed and worked with include Joan Tower, John Adams, Esa Pekka Salonen, Lou Harrison, Karen Tanaka, and Alex Shapiro. As a composer herself, her compositions have been commissioned and performed by dance companies such as The Perks at the Cunningham Space in New York City and at Jacob's Pillow; Santa Barbara Dance Theater, as well as at the Oakland Dance Festival, UCSB, Old First Concerts, Santa. Clara Univ. New Music Festival, Cal State LA, and at Strings Showcase in Berkeley. Ms. Abondolo premiered her composition entitled "En el Sueño de la Libertad" for cello and orchestra this past May, 2010, with the Contra Costa Chamber Orchestra. Of her recordings, her CD “De’ja` Vu”, was showcased on San Francisco Bay Area radio stations, “Sing Out” KPFA and KALW. Gianna is a former lecturer of UC Berkeley and is on the faculty of Mills College in Oakland, California. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree from Mt. St. Mary’s College in Los Angeles, and a Master’s Degree from the Juilliard School of Music.
