Greg Martin

Biography

Greg has been a life long musician. He began his professional career in the 1970’s playing bars and coffeehouses. Notable bookings included George’s Spaghetti House in Toronto famous for its booking of top flight jazz musicians where Greg’s unusual mix of jazz, Latin and folk styling caught the owners ear. Moving to British Columbia he played festivals such as Edgewood, Courtenay and Nakusp as well as such notable establishments as the Soft Rock Café.

In the 1980’s Greg spent time performing in California at the same time taking advantage of the professional development opportunities there. Notable performances included opening for Tom Coster of Santana fame and Steve Smith from the rock super group Journey. In addition to his performances as a singer and songwriter he worked extensively as a sideman playing both guitar and keyboards while honing his skills in the recording studio. At the end of the decade he took a position as staff producer at Grapevine Studios in Vancouver, British Columbia.

In the 1990’s Greg did stints as music director for the bands One Riddim, and Tasi Sharp as well as working as a sideman with Fresh Wood. He toured with Craig Jacks and was the arranger of note on his eponymous A&M recording. Midway through the decade Greg decided to leave the music business for a while for family reasons.

The 2000’s saw Greg begin his return to music. He founded the Edmonton Blues Society and was its president for three years. He performed at festivals such as Wild Oats and Notes, Rangeton and Athabasca and was a featured artist at the Edmonton Folk Club.

Here we are in the second decade of the second millenium and Greg has returned writing songs and making records. His most recent release, "The Chalice", is a must here. A romantic tour de force.
