Greg Wollan and New Command

Biography

GREG WOLLAN - Greg Wollan's musical resume is as long as your arm; as songwriter, vocalist, producer and player, Greg has delved into a wide variety of musical styles, resulting in a vast body of work.

Greg began playing in club bands in the upper Midwest right out of high school covering such artists as Kansas, Supertramp, Steely Dan, etc., laying a foundation for the kind of music he would someday be writing and producing.

After doing the club thing for years, Greg made the move to Nashville, where he conquered bouts with substance abuse and despondency. Soon Greg secured a spot playing with Christian artist Steve Taylor from 1994 through 1997 on the tours following his “Squint” release, and appeared on Steve's “Liver” CD. During this time he also played with power-pop artist Doug Powell, as well as releasing his own first CD, “Luminosity."

Arriving back in Minneapolis in the late 90’s, a string of original CDs followed: "The Word to the World," "Glorybound" and "Architect of Beauty," all of which had a classic rock vibe with some progressive flavorings. The next disc, "The Good King's Highway," led Greg into yet more progressive waters.

After releasing his well-received 2006 progressive-rock album "Deep Calls 2 Deep," Greg felt it was time to explore the acoustic side of his artistry, and concentrate on writing/recording music accordingly for his next album, "Damascus Journey." As this project progressed, Greg approached Bruce and Bob about joining him in a musical trio setting to support live performance of this new material, and that's how New Command was born.

Bruce Bailey began his musical journey at a very young age, when he received a baritone ukulele as a gift from his father. From that day, he was hooked on 4-stringed instruments. Like Greg and Bob, Bruce is self-taught. Bruce has recently taken up cello, adding even more variety and richness to the trio.

BRUCE BAILEY - Born on South Side of Chicago, son of a ministry leader and grandson of Presbyterian missionaries, Bruce moved to the Twin Cities at age 10.

Bruce began playing seriously at age 15, when he joined his junior high orchestra, playing double bass. At 17, the electric bass grabbed his attention and never let go. Since those early days, Bruce's bass has graced a myriad of local groups; The White Knuckles Bluegrass Band, Colt .45 and Wheels. Bruce has also played with country legend Freddy Fender and his bands have shared the stage with the likes of Alabama and Ronnie Millsap. Bruce also loves to do studio recording.

Ask Bruce, and he will tell you that he’s nothing special, but that so belies his mastery of all stringed things of deep pitch, and his warm, rich baritone voice.

BOB KNIGHT - Bob Knight is a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Southern California. He’s lived in Minnesota for 15 years. In California, Bob was member of a number of performing groups, and honed his skills at songwriting, playing, arranging and production on the stages and in the studios of Hollywood, as well as his home turf of Orange County.

In the mid-80’s Bob, guitar luminary John Jorgenson and rockabilly siren Kittra Strejan banded together as "cowpunk" band Cheatin’ Hearts, and gigged extensively around the L.A. area.

Since his move to the Frozen North in 1996, Bob has continued to write original music, and has played with and led several groups around the Twin Cities. Bob’s interest in instruments such as bouzouki, mandolin, Dobro and lap steel guitar is steeped in the California traditions of country-rock, modern folk and contemporary world music.
