“Trust in the Lord with ALL thine heart and lean not into thine own understanding; in all thy ways acknowledge him and he shall direct your path.”
The name is (Herbert d. woods) HB and what a magnificent child of God is he. Coming from the south specifically Mobile Alabama, HB’s talent reigned while just a young child. It becomes the typical traditional story of a singer, but something about him gave him away. Something allowed him to stand out in a crowd. What is his strong voice that was touched by God’s anointing? Or was it the baby face and trendy style he led others around him to see?
Whatever it was, HB is now making his way to the top. Inspired by legends such as Stevie Wonder, Sam Cook, Luther Vandross, Temptations, The Ojays, New Edition, R. Kelly and Usher, HB knows the fulfillment and sacrifice that it takes to become such an artist. “It’s not so much that some of the artists that I am inspired by just happened to be key people in the genre of R & B,” he says with a smile. “But throughout most of my childhood, any music made me feel complete. Some of my most Top inspirations were John P. Kee, Rance Allen, Fred Hammond, Kirk Franklin, Deitrick Haddon, Smokie Norful, Kim Burrell, The Clark Sisters, The Mighty Clouds of Joy or Men of Standard. They still are my inspiration and I just love them for who they have become.”
With his Southern accent, clean cut, decent appearance and manners, we can truly say we have a huge Hit on our hands. HB is all about using what God has gifted him with to fulfill God’s ministry through his music. “I knew I could sing, but at other times I knew that I could minister. So I asked myself which one do I really want to be, a singer or a preacher? Then, it hit me; why not do both. Regardless I am still going to do God’s will and with my faith I know that ANYTHING is possible.” HB plans to extend the ministry God has given him not only to the church, but to the streets and to the whole world for the Glory of God.
When asked what gospel in general has done to change his life, he had these words to say, “Gospel music has kept me sane in an insane world. It has given peace in the midst of all my storms and it has given me Purpose and Direction in my life.” HB, simply meaning ‘holy boy’, has been a way of symbolizing his love and grace for God to others. Many songs written by HB speaks of the change of his ways on the streets to a more upbeat tempo that gets you rocking on your feet all the way back to a soft encounter by ‘Holding On’ and being encouraged when times get rough. An astounding story of hopes, praises, laughter, understanding, happiness, unity, redemption, faith and most of all, EVERYTHING working together for the good.
“Despite of what the world says, I encourage you to know God for yourself, because he IS real and he is concerned about you. Having your own relationship with God is more precious than all the world and religion can offer you. John 3:16 says ‘For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten song that whosoever believeth in him, shall not perish but have everlasting life’. So I encourage you to know him for yourself. He gave, so now you must give. It’s Your Boy H. B.
