Hidden Frequency is the alias of Finnish indie/electronic musician Kimmo Koivula, born in Helsinki in 1983. Inspired by the likes of The Prodigy and The Chemical Brothers he started making electronic dance music in the late 1990s. The music was mostly break-beat, techno and drum & bass at first. After exploring many different genres during the years the musical style has slowly shifted towards downtempo and ambient.
The project Hidden Frequency started in 2012 and the debut album 'Imaginary Time' saw daylight on the following year. The sophomore album 'The Fifth Element' was released a year after that, in 2014. An EP titled 'Something From Nothing' was also released in 2014. It showcases more old-school sound as it is almost entirely composed with the Roland MC-505 groovebox. The single 'Dreaming' and the latest album 'Wave Patterns' were released on 2015.
All releases have been independently produced and financed.
Hidden Frequency's sound is focused on atmospheric soundscapes, chilled grooves and downtempo rhythms. He loves hardware and likes to experiment with different setups and sounds and play with odd time-signatures. When choosing sounds to his productions he prefers hardware synths, effects and guitar pedals. All songs are recorded and produced in his small home studio. Genre-blending songs are fusion of electronica, downtempo, chill out, ambient, drum & bass, post-rock and experimental music.
The music is inspired by life, the universe and everything.
