The Hot Club of Philadelphia was founded in 2001 by guitarist Barry Wahrhaftig, and violinist Mark Campiglia. We are an acoustic jazz quartet, dedicated to playing and preserving the music of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli, adding our own style and arrangements.
Barry has studied Gypsy Jazz guitar with players like Stephane Wrembel and Fapy Lafertin.
The quartet includes Jim Stager on acoustic bass, Joe Ellis or Alex Siniavski on Rhythm guitar. Rich Yescalis, Rhythm guitar, still performs with the group from time to time, especially if there is BBQ involved(!) Barry plays a Manouche/Belleville Modele Jazz, Selmer Replica guitar.
Bob Butryn, [clarinet], and vocalists Denise King and Phyllis Chapell appears with the band often.
The band has performed at Djangofest NorthEast the World Cafe in Phila, and many summer festivals house concerts etc. And has appeared with artists Howard Alden, [of Sweet & Lowdown fame], John Jorgenson, Stephane Wrembel.
We make accessable, fun and passionate music, whenever and wherever we can!
