Hugh Morrison

Biography

After twelve years in the States, Scots born singer Morrison returns to his homeland for inspiration on his latest project. He takes some of his favorite Robert Burns' work and has rocked them further than they have been rocked before but still choosing on occasion not to forget his Celtic roots. This album is sure to bring attention to those who are unfamiliar with Scotland’s Bard, by opening up his material to a whole new and somewhat diverse audience.

Enlisted on this album are Morrison’s punk rock pals from Boston’s Street Dogs, Johnny Rioux and Marcus Hollar, whom Morrison plays with regularly these days on the Festival Circuit.
Joining him too are seasoned Celtic performers, Banchory’s Scottish Golden Fiddle Champion - Judi Nicolson and from Virginia, Kendall Rogers. Houston’s Celtic Rockers Murder the Stout contribute with first class bass & drums from Jay Brooks and Andy Salmon respectively.

There is the welcome addition of the authentic upright bass playing of Corey Kaiser who can be found performing on Broadway’s “Million Dollar Quartet” showpiece. Rounding off the line-up is the beauty you can find in the voice of Ireland’s Aoife Ni Ghlionn, who gives Morrison’s lyrics a very McGowan/O’Conner-esque feel. All this is complemented sporadically with Morrison’s own distinctive driving squeezebox.

Murder the Stout frontman, Morrison, on this new release does exactly as the album title, Robert Burns Rocks, suggests. Taking the lead vocal role by the scruff of the neck, he delivers a superb emotionally charged performance.

Ali MacGregor's Music Collection
2009
This is real Scottish dance band style and as you’d hear in many “Ceilidh dance halls” across Scotland, with only the squeezebox, fiddle & piano appearing. Lots of harmonising between the fiddle & squeezebox makes this a pleasurable listen.
