A rabid fan of The Boondock Saints, the "Gangland" show on the History channel, The Sopranos, The Departed, etc., plus drawing on his own life and stories of his friends and the people in the city around him, Irish Mike truly had a unique vision of a different type of "rock and roll", a new type heavily influenced by the Gangsta Rap that many of us have grown up with, while his band the GenPool developed a free-form style that perfectly fit Irish's Jim Morrison - meets- Tupac vision. Over the course of 3 years, we got two albums' worth of highly original material, much of it improvised and raw, plus Irish and myself wrote and recorded his "My Own Battlefield" album about that same time. Work had begun on his 2nd solo album, but it didn't come to pass.
Irish Mike assembled The Gen Pool in the summer of 2008. The members were basically all laid off from their Autoworker jobs, and were put in a "Job Bank", or, as our company called it, a "GEN Pool". Irish always told the story like it was a movie, of him walking the halls of this building (believe me people, these places were NOT "fun") picking off the members of the band from people he'd just met - his friend from the line, John "Rabbi" Ratica, who played a little guitar; this guy named Mike Cornelius (who Irish saw walking with an acoustic guitar one day and yelled "HEY! Are you gonna play that thing, or just walk around with it?!"); and myself, outside in the parking lot, beating on the curb with some sticks, teaching myself to play drums (he said "and there's my drummer!"). John Petcou on bass was a friend of Mike Cornelius', and came a little later.
Irish Mike thought of himself as Michigan's Narrator, your guide through the seedy streets and factories of Detroit, the modern day Wild West. The stories he tells are true stories of real people, most of whom can't speak for themselves. Or choose not to.
But its not hip-hop, its not alternative rock, its Gangsta Rock. You've been warned.
