Jessica Smith known professionally as J. Chantel grew up in Prichard, AL near Mobile. J. Chantel was surrounded by music at an early age, learning to play the trumpet at the age of ten. Her parents enforced that she took it to church as she states; "Once I started playing the trumpet, My Mom and dad never let me leave home without it" She always dreamed of being a star but never knowing how it could be possible. "I was always told I would be something great by the people around me but where I'm from it was rare" J. Chantel didn't have the so called luxury in a musician's world such as private instructors or good music programs. She struggled to teach herself music because of inconsistent directors throughout grade school. "I learned what I heard at church and my favorites on the radio and combined the two and created my own sound" She went on to attend Alabama State University where she was able to develop better as a musician by participating in every instrumental ensemble. In 2010 she got her start in her music career playing and singing background for local cover bands. Jessica worked two jobs while gigging with different bands to support her and her son. Her past experiences from sexual molestation as a child to Domestic violence, she overcame it all.
In 2012 Jessica ,a struggling single parent ,fed up with singing and playing with cover bands, packed up and moved with her son to Georgia to take her music career to the next level so that she could provide a better life for her and her family. There she began to develop herself as an artist by focusing more on her singing while performing in Atlanta and making places such as Apache Café her home away from home as she states; “The environment was so great that every time I stepped on stage, they made me feel like a star" At the top of 2013, It was the birth of a new Genre “Eclectic/Soul” as J.Chantel released her first single "Cold days in July" a collaborative effort with Music Composer and friend K.Black and producer Gr8 Trakz that became a masterpiece.
Her soulful and unique voice grasped the attention of her audience. Music reviewer Jay. M from UN. Radio said" She reminded me of a young Aretha or even Lauren Hill to a lesser extent, would definitely buy the album" She is known for her different sound as she makes any music her own. She is a unique artist and you never know what to expect next and seeing her live is definitely an exhilarating experience. J.Chantel is a novelty on the music scene singing and complimenting her voice with the edgy sound of the trumpet.
The beauty of Eclectic/Soul is destined to save music and J.Chantel plans to be a leader in the music industry. "I plan to take this industry to another level when I am allowed the opportunity because nothing of this world is more important than me sharing my music with the world" J.
