J.Chantel was born Jessica Chantel Smith on a warm august night in 1986 in Mobile Alabama. She was the youngest of her siblings. She started playing trumpet at the age of 10 after she was inspired by a guy(Jerel "Relik" Simon that played at church. She went on to play in middle school and high school. Jessica went through a total of 6 band directors in 7 years. Learning a different lesson from each one, Jessica went to further her education at Alabama State University where she became a Mighty Marching Hornet and excelled musically. Jessica has been playing now for over 15 years and has played with many bands on the Gulf Coast. She also is a member of a brass band out of Mobile Alabama(Bay City Brass Band) along with the band She has played for Mardi Gras, Imperial Palace Casino, The beau Rivage, Bayfest,The W.C Handy Festival, Gulf Coast heritage Jazz Festival etc..She also has played behind Gospel artist such as Bishop Neal Roberson, Marvin Sapp and Norman Hutchins.
J.Chantel is in one of the hottest show bands on the gulf Coast(MixUP). She now resides in Georgia where she has become a recording artist. She is a singer/songwriter/musician and actress that takes the breath away from her audience with the release of her first single(Cold days in July) Produced by Kevin "Gr8 Trakz" Lamar.New to the scene, J.Chantel has appeared at some of the hot spots on the Atlanta scene such as Cafe 290, Apache Cafe. She is inspired by artist such as Miles Davis, Louis Armstrong, Wynton Marsalis,Trombone Shorty, John Legend and Ashanti Floyd(The mad Violinist)
This novelty often considers herself as the first female trumpet player to change the game and hang in there with the fellas. J.Chantel is a firm believer in God as she states "The only way to be something that you've never been is to Trust God and never stop" She often says that "This is not a Dream, It's my Purpose for Existence". She is becoming one of the most talked about musicians on the Gulf Coast gaining the name "Female Trumpeter of the South". Once you've seen her perform, You will never forget her!
