J.W. Basilo

J.W. Basilo is a guy who never learned how to shut up. He is also a writer, performer, humorist and musician from Chicago whose work is equal parts poignant and perverse, hilarious and heart-wrenching. His raucous stage act, a vaudville-esque mash-up of poetry, music, comedy and storytelling, has earned him a reputation as one of the most sought-after and compelling spoken word artists working today. Basilo is a National and World Poetry Slam finalist, a PushCart Prize Nominee, Artistic Director of Chicago Slam Works, one half of Poetry/Comedy duo Beard Fight (with Dan Sully) and an Artist in Residence at Real Talk Avenue. His work has appeared on NPR, WGN, in the Chicago Tribune, numerous literary journals and in hundreds of theaters, dive bars, prisons, schools and comedy clubs across North America. His one man dramedy, No One Can Fix You, debuted in 2009 to rave reviews in Chicago, Seattle, and New York City. When not on stage or banging his forehead on a keyboard, Basilo teaches writing and performance all over the country. All things considered, he’s doing pretty well for a guy who failed Creative Writing in high school. His artful jackassery can be found at his internet home,
