Jacob Anthony Hallman

Born into a middle-class Kansas City family, Jacob Anthony Hallman grew up calling in to his favorite local radio station with requests for songs. He often would use the cassette player to record himself singing along. Even at this young age, it was apparent that his life was destined for a path in the arts. As he grew older, his experiences broadened between the consumer-oriented world of jazz and pop and the visionary world of fine-art music. During high school in rural Kansas, Hallman split his time between leading his fellow students as a drum major and lead saxophonist in the jazz band and playing at church with the praise team. College brought with it the emphasis on concert saxophone repertoire to balance any modern musician as well as a foray into the local Tulsa music scene with The Birdcatchers. The transformational process of living abroad for three years leaves Hallman with a distinctly French music worldview accompanied by a Midwestern sensibility. His listening influences span a diverse set of artists: Richard Ducros, Pat Metheny, Nina Simone, Kenny Garrett, Charles Mingus, Frederic Borey, The Yellowjackets, Francis Poulenc, Felix Mendelssohn, György Ligeti, Gustav Mahler, Jamiroquai, The Gotan Project, and Jon Hopkins.
