The passion to write and ultimately produce great songs began at the age of 13. In 1983 James won a talent competition, awarding him his first radio single, “Only a Fool Falls in Love”. In the years that followed James combined a corporate career and education but returned to recording his original music with the release of “Legacy” in 2002.
James maintained his relationship with elite session players from some of Canada’s premier bands past and present and in 2010, with his corporate days behind him, he released textures canadiana. This collection of music reflects the music he experienced while growing up and travelling the expanse of this country during his career. “Embedded in textures canadiana are the sounds of Tyson, Lightfoot, Cohen, Young, and others.” (James Avery).
This was followed by Come of Age in 2011, “an album of mature and sophisticated song writing” (Okanagan Life Magazine, Fall 2011). But James’ most prolific year of song writing has been 2012 with 3 new recording projects, The Roots of Song, followed by Long Way Home, and Way of the Bard.
