James Wesley Stemple

James Wesley Stemple, Composer

James Wesley Stemple enjoys a prolific career composing music for film, television and other media, applying his natural diversity of style and attitude to suit each project's inherent uniqueness. James is comfortable working both domestically and internationally and has recorded with many world-class musicians all over the globe - in London, Rio de Janeiro, Sofia, Johannesburg, S.A. as well as numerous locations in the U.S.

Raised in Washington, D.C., James began his music career performing locally. After a brief diversion in the study of Architecture, he graduated cum laude (on full scholarship) with a Bachelor of Music degree from the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami in Coral Gables. Following graduation, a nationwide tour with the orchestra of "A Chorus Line" provided an excellent environment for the study of music scores - for films, classical music and jazz. Upon conclusion of the tour, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in film scoring.

Shortly after arriving in Los Angeles, he was offered a teaching assistantship (again on full scholarship) at the University of Southern California and entered the Masters Program in Music Composition - receiving conservatory training in orchestration, counterpoint and composition. His first concert work "Sleeping Giant" won First Prize in a national media music competition and was awarded a premiere by the Denver Symphony Orchestra. He has been selected as a Sundance Composing Fellow, a Peer Judge for the Emmy Awards and Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival and has been featured in radio interviews, University lectures and articles and reviews in The Hollywood Reporter and Variety. He has been nominated for two Emmy Awards and to date has worked on over 20 films, scores of commercials and written hundreds of hours of music for television.

These days James can be found working in his state-of-the-art ProTools powered composing and recording facility. He has an extensive and eclectic collection of musical instruments from all over the world - which he employs for both traditional and completely unconventional uses.

In a devolved world of 'off-the-rack' musical fashion derived from generic loops and samples, James is hard at work creating unique and distinctive sonic fabrics that are colorful, imaginative and custom tailored to his client’s specific needs. The goal is to create intriguing one-of-a-kind musical solutions that raise the client's project to a new level. In the midst of the dominance of digital technology, James has found a way to stay true to his roots - and when it is appropriate, combine the best of both worlds by augmenting fundamentally rich and natural sound with cutting edge technology.
