Biography

Whether I’m teaching at Harvard Medical School, seeing clients in my private practice, writing for newspapers and magazines or creating YouTube videos, I am dedicated to helping people keep physically, emotionally and mentally fit.

I’m a licensed psychotherapist and a certified hypnotherapist. I have trained in several therapeutic approaches, all of which fall under the umbrella of behavioral medicine or mind-body medicine. Mine is an integrative approach that combines cognitive-behavioral therapy and psychodynamic psychotherapy, among other schools of therapy.

I have an appointment with the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. Through the Behavioral Medicine Department at the Cambridge Health Alliance, a teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School, I teach and supervise professionals and advanced trainees in hypnosis.

I got my BA in English Literature from Brandeis University; my MSW from Simmons School for Social Work. I’ve practiced psychotherapy for the last 15 years in a variety of settings, including state prisons, community mental health centers, public hospitals and private practice. Currently, I see clients solely at my Concord, Massachusetts, private practice.

I’m licensed to practice psychotherapy in Massachusetts as a licensed independent clinical social worker (LICSW). I am a member of the National Association of Social Workers, the Society for Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis, and the New England Society for Clinical Hypnosis. As a hypnotherapist, I am certified by the American Society for Clinical Hypnosis, the major association for practicing hypnotherapists founded by Milton Erickson.

My writing career predates my clinical practice. A veteran journalist, I’ve been writing health and fitness features for newspapers (from The Boston Globe to The LA Times) and magazines (including Oprah Magazine, Conde Nast Traveler, Self) for more than two decades. Through the ‘80s, I wrote a syndicated fitness column, distributed world-wide by The LA Times Syndicate. More recently, I've turned to book writing. "The Self-Compassion Diet: A Step-by-Step Program to Lose Weight with Loving-Kindness" (Sounds True, Jan. 2011) is my first book.
