It is nearly midnight when Jennifer Gammill noses her mini-SUV out of the employee parking lot and speeds toward the interstate. This is the summer tourist season, and the heat and humidity have made for a long evening of performances at the oceanfront. But the weather doesn’t dampen her excitement. With the songs from her last set fresh on her mind, she sings her way home as the night breeze whips through her hair.
Music is Jennifer’s daily life. Her radio dial is set to the local pop station, her concert tickets are to the symphony, her day job is piano instruction, and her church plays Gospel. As a performer, music from the 60’s, Broadway, Swing, and Jazz are her favorites. Jennifer’s own music blends these influences in songs born out of personal experience – songs that tell a story, react to life, and reflect her hope in the future. Songwriting has also been her therapy: “I hope that others can identify with the same struggles and gain hope from my songs.”
Her voice and songwriting has been compared to Sara Bareilles and Tori Amos. “I love writing for my own voice,” explains Jennifer, “since I have a ‘crossover’ Broadway style and not your typical alto pop voice.” Piano-driven arrangements show off poignant lyrics, a sweet soprano voice, and delightful harmonies on flute, strings, or harp. Supported by electric riffs and acoustic rhythms, Jennifer beckons the listener to personal discovery, brightening the soul.
