“One of the most promising songwriters to come along in years” – No Depression
"Absolutely superb" - "Whispering" Bob Harris, BBC
Signed to Universal in 2012, with a forthcoming EP produced by eight-time Grammy winner Jay Newland (Norah Jones, Esperanza Spaulding), Johanna Divine is a Knoxville-born songwriter, singer, filmmaker and radio host whose Southern roots – from Tennessee to Texas, Florida to Louisiana – have inspired a soulful and wide-ranging body of work.
In 2010, she released the acclaimed solo CD Mile High Rodeo, brought her original burlesque-inspired musical, Le Reve de Marionettes, to La MaMa Theater in New York, and toured nationally with Michelle Shocked. In 2012, she completed her second set of original tunes, Electric Tide, with producers Dirk Powell (Joan Baez, Jack White) and Glenn Patscha (Sheryl Crow, Bonnie Raitt) and launched her first European tour. Johanna's original songs have been included in feature films and recorded by both French and U.S. artists.
As an artist, Divine digs through the dusty things in our attics, finding lost treasures and painting them up new again. Her songs carry traces of the honkytonk, swamp pop, swing and blues absorbed in her native South, but the distinct voice, and the open heart behind it, are all her own.
Highlight performances include: Joe's Pub (NYC), SXSW (TX), Festival International (LA), Black Box Music Fest (Belfast, IE) and Whelan's (Dublin, IE). Her rooted yet personal performance style has inspired TimeOut New York to call her music “lovely and impressive,” while Offbeat says she’s an artist “to keep an eye on.”
