John Holenko is a guitarist and mandolin player based out of Charleston, SC. After spending a few years playing folk and rock as a teenager, John began studying Classical guitar and went on to receive degrees in Classical Guitar Performance from The New England Conservatory of Music in Boston and the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. While always keeping a foot in the popular music world, John embraced the world of classical music and also studied Renaissance and Medieval music. John was a member of the Medeival group Sonus, recording internationally released CD’s, playing festivals in the U.S. and Europe, and publishing several editions with Mel Bay Publications.
Since relocating to the South, John has become very active in the traditional music of America and Ireland. Playing guitar, mandolin, and banjo, John has been a member of several traditional folk groups including The Donnybrook Legacy, and his current band The Hungry Monks.
As a solo artist, John plays the Classical repertoire he spent years working on in school, as well as solo Celtic guitar, Blues, Folk, and original compositions. Playing both finger style and flat picking guitar, John can easily go from a Medieval troubadour ballad, to a Celtic jig, to Delta blues, to an original song, with great ease, creating a varied program of engaging music.
