John Lamb former Bass Player with Duke Ellington
John Lamb was born in Florida and was conservatory trained. Before joining Ellington, he played with Red Garland (1954-55), served as as airman in the USAF(1950-53) & (1955-60, playing tuba and string bass), and played with pianist Johnny Walker (1962 - 64). John initially spent three years with Duke Ellington (1964-67) where he was the bass player on three of Ellington's Grammy-award winning recordings. After 1967 John played occasionally with Duke in trio or band settings. John has performed with Ella Fitzgerald, Mel Torme, and Peggy Lee among many other singers. He was on the Ed Sullivan Show, the Bell Telephone Hour and performed with the Boston Pops, New York Philharmonic, Toronto Symphony, Pittsburg Symphony, and more. John has been invited to perform by the Ellington Societies of Toronto and the United Kingdom. He has also been invited to perform for and lecture to students of several major universities.
